RF Land and Livestock is our cropping and livestock production company. This allows us to have complete control of the feed and management of our stock. Working closely with our nutritionist, adjustments can be made quickly to account for changes in genetics, nutritional requirements or new cropping opportunities
We grow all the crops used to feed our animals. Working 700 acres of ground to produce corn, wheat, soybeans, corn silage, hay, straw and various other forage crops.
Our feed manufacturing capabilities allow us to process the crops we grow to feed our animals. Soybeans are pressed and heated to remove oil and cooked to destroy any antinutritional factors. We then combine with ground corn, vitamins and minerals. The resulting mix is then run through our extruder to cook the starches which increases the digestibility of the concentrate. This combined, with homegrown hay and sileages, produces the complete balanced nutrition our cattle require.
Our veal starts out with male Holstein and Holstein x beef calves purchased from local dairy farmers. They start out on milk replacer and a grain based starter diet is introduced gradually until the are on complete solid feed by 8 weeks of age. The animals are then placed on a 3 stage concentrate/forage program until they reach a final weight of 700 lbs at which time they are processed into our high quality veal. At any given time we will have 2,500 veal on feed at various locations
For our beef production we use the more traditional beef breeds. Limousin and Limousin cross cattle have performed very well for us in the past producing superior quality carcasses but we are constantly looking at different crosses to assess their potential. Cattle are started at approximately 600 lbs and fed up to final market weight of 1500 lbs again using our homegrown grains and forages. Currently we finish about 750 cattle per year
